My Only City: The Sounds of the West Terrace

What is MY ONLY CITY: the sounds of the West Terrace?
It is a self-initiated project by artist, sound recordist and archivist Duncan Whitley. The project will be published as a searchable, online sound archive, that explores the soundscapes of Coventry City Football Club's Highfield Road stadium. It will feature over 500 minutes of delicately crafted sound recordings, recorded during the 2004/2005 season, City's last at the ground before moving to the Ricoh Arena.

What is 'binaural sound'?
The entire collection of sound recordings uses binaural sound. This is a stereo sound recording technique, which uses two small microphones placed in, or near, the ears of the sound recordist. When listened using headphones, binaural sound recordings can create a vivid sense of the space in which the recordings were made. Listeners can often detect sounds coming from all directions, including from above and behind. It is highly recommended that you use headphones to listen to the archive recordings.

When will the project go live?
The project is currently in development, and the site will be updated periodically (including new sounds on the 'listen' page). The detailed cataloguing and editing of the 1,200 minutes of raw material, and the database work which will drive the fully-searchable online archive, are labour-intensive processes. There is no release date as yet for the archive to go 'live', but in the meantime you can keep in touch with developments here.
