My Only City: The Sounds of the West Terrace

Duncan Whitley is a UK-based sound recordist, artist and archivist. He works primarily through self-initiated projects, commissions and artist residencies. As an artist working with "non-musical" sound he is fundamentally interested in themes of acoustic communication. He is interested in the ways "deep listening" may enrich our understanding of the world.

His recent and ongoing projects with field recording include recordings of high-rise demolitions ("blow-downs") around the UK; a study of the "saeta" (a form of religious song, a flamenco prayer sung in the streets of Andalucia during the Easter processions) in Seville; a project with an amateur football club in rural Portugal, focused on video and sound work during training sessions; and carefully crafted, spatial sound recordings documenting crowd chant at a number of football stadiums in the UK.

Duncan's work has been shown both nationally and internationally (Portugal, Poland, Turkey and Japan), and he currently works as an associated artist of PVA MediaLab (Dorset, UK) and Binaural Media (Viseu, Portugal). He also works as a sound recordist and consultant for artist projects, as well as sound effects and sound recording for television and film.
